Why Should I Donate to Associated Camps, Inc.?
Associated Camps, Inc., Block and Hexter Vacation Center, a charitable, 501 (c) 3 non-profit agency, serves hundreds of clients each week throughout the spring, summer and fall. Our agency provides a much needed service to the elderly from the greater New York-Metropolitan area, many of whom are on limited incomes and come to us for a short holiday away from their homes in the city
Block and Hexter serves Jewish seniors across the financial spectrum. Though many guests can comfortably afford this precious social and educational experience, it’s worth remembering that, at its core, our mission is to serve those without the means. UJA-Federation of New York and the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty recently estimated there are nearly 100,000 elderly Jewish poor and near poor in the eight county New York area. They are predominantly women, widowed and alone; many are Russian.
Last camp season, we granted scholarships that averaged $335 to one out of every six clients. If we’d had more to give, we’d have served more people.
Block & Hexter’s ability to survive and fulfill its communal imperative to serve the poor elderly depends on its ability to provide high quality facilities that will bring back middle and upper-middle class guests, and enable the center to justify increasing its tuition to meet the cost of inflation. Towards this end, Block & Hexter has embarked on an extensive, 10-year, $15 million renovation and handicapped-accessibility project. To date, our agency has raised $1.6 million out of approximately $3.6 million which is needed to complete Phase I. At completion of this phase, the agency will have enlarged and modernized four of its existing 12-room guest houses, built a new 12 unit guest house as well as a caretaker’s residence, transformed its fitness center into a spa, and installed central air conditioning in the dining room and recreation hall.
